Tour Itinerary
Garajau (Christ Statue)
Garajau’s prominent landmark is the huge statue of Christ, which was erected in 1927. It is a replica of the Christ, in Rio de Janeiro and Lisbon. It offers fine views of Funchal and of passing cruises heading for the harbour.
Pico do Arieiro
Ascend on the Madeira East Tour towards Pico Arieiro, the island’s third highest peak at 1818m. Experience the transition from lush woodland to rugged cliffs, offering stunning vistas and rare Madeira junipers on descent.
Easy Walk - Levada dos Balcões
Leaving Pico Areiro continuing your journey up hill, through small terraces lining the road where you can find all types of fruits before you reach the Madeira Laurissilva Forest. This Forest was classified in the World Heritage by UNESCO in 1999. Here the fresh clean cold water of the Ribeiro Frio (meaning cold river) are channelled into series of deep pools to create a small trout farm.
Here we will do a +/- 45min Easy and Flat Walk called Levada dos Balcões, where at the end you will witness a beautiful balcony with a lot of birds.
Santana A-Framed Houses
Next, visit the charming village of Santana, showcasing domestic and agricultural richness. Green terraced fields and orchards adorn the landscape, with unique triangular thatched buildings once used as cow sheds. Explore their spacious interiors and discover its history.

Guindaste Viewpoint
A quick stop at Miradouro do Guindaste where you have a small Glass Sky Walk. This observatory offers a stunning view of its surroundings, blending verdant hills, coastal cliffs, and clear ocean waters. Visitors can see unique geological formations and a wide panorama of Madeira’s northern coast, including distant Porto Santo on clear days.
Porto da Cruz
On the North Coast, nestled at the foot of Penha d’Aguia rock amid steep terraced slopes. Discover the active sugar mill, scenic sea promenade, maze-like alleys, and evolving café scene, renowned for its wine.
We will visit Engenhos do Norte, a Sugar Cane Mill where you will be OFFERED a shot of local RUM, FIREWATER and BROAS DE MEL
Ponta de São Lourenço
Ponta de São Lourenço marks the easternmost point of the island. The climate around Caniçal and São Lourenço resembles that of Porto Santo. Unique vegetation and stunning rock formations adorn this area, offering simultaneous views of the north and south coasts, with Porto Santo visible on clear days.
Pico do Facho
Machico Bay, where Madeira was first discovered, boasts a unique valley resembling a balcony overlooking sea and mountains. Vital for sugar cane and mills until the 17th century, its eastern side is watched over by Pico do Facho, named for its historic pirate-warning beacon.

This is a very good value for money tour. There is a lot to it. The highlight was probably Pico Arieiro, we had perfect weather and being above the clouds was spectacular. The optional lunch in Santana was good value for money for two courses including wine and coffee. The path along a levada is wide and easy leading to a lovely viewpoint. There are a few things that could be improved...

We didn't have a car and this East Island tour was a good opportunity to visit various sites in the centre and east of Madeira.
Pick up at our hotel was on time.
The driver and guide (Luis?) gave plenty of information en route without bombarding us with too much information.

It was a great trip. We visited many places, starting from Picode Arieiro to Ponta do Sao Lourenco, there was a walk in Levanda and the National Park. We were in Santana and elsewhere.
