Tour Itinerary
Pico dos Barcelos Viewpoint
High above the hotel zone is a tree topped belvedere. Pico dos Barcelos has an observation point on the edge of Funchal, it is 355m (1165 ft). There’s a magnificent view across Funchal from the top of the viewpoint. The nuns valley tour will then hen take the old narrow, very winding road, up through the eucalyptus forest until Eira do Serrado, absorbing the picturesque view of the peaks.
Eira do Serrado Viewpoint
The viewpoint at Eira do Serrado offers breathtaking views over Curral das Freiras, a valley encased by steep peaks. Previously thought to be a volcanic crater, its unique shape actually results from erosion. The area is rich in agriculture, with terraces of wine, fruits, vegetables, and sweet chestnut trees below.
Nuns Valley
We then Head down in to the Village of Nuns Valley – Curral das Freiras it is one of the most spectacularly situated rural settlements on the island. It is situated in a huge natural amphitheatre, surrounded by some of Madeira’s highest peaks. The village was founded in the sixteenth century by the nuns of the convent of “Santa Clara” in Funchal, from where the nuns fled from pirate attacks in 1566. The centre of the village is situated on a small rise in the middle of the valley. Leaving Nuns Valley you head for your Hotel.

I have done two tours with the Madeira Airport Transfers this year. Both of the tours were fantastic!
Both guides Christian and Ruben were great at explaining the tours. Both came on time. I corresponded with Rosa Rodriguez and she is great at coordinating my three tours, Nuns Valley, East and West side tours. Also, an airport transfer this year. Last year I did three tours with them..

A very pleasant tour to the top of the mountains to take in the magnificent views. Our guide/driver was very informative and ensured we stayed on time and he answered all our questions. We finished the tour in the valley, where there was time for coffee and chestnut cake. This is a great tour if you don’t have a hire car whilst in Funchal on vacation. The tour lasted all afternoon and we were back for the evening.

Overall the tour was very nice- but it is definitely not a small group tour. The activity listed on getyourguide suggests that you can choose between a private and small group tour. We chose the small group tour and the van was full- about 20 people. It took an hour for the driver to go around Funchal picking all of guests before the tour actually started. Other than that- it was a great time. The guide was a great driver and had plenty of stories to tell along the way.

This is the cheapest tour to the Nuns Valley. However, it is only transportation. In the 3 places, nothing is said. Only in 1 place on the way. It's good transport, only you stand still a bit too long in the places. 20 mins at Funchel viewpoint, 40 mins at Nuns valley viewpoint and 45 mins in Nuns valley. However, you always have to wait 20 minutes at tourist shops. The Nuns Valley was not very special and was small. There was a small museum, which was nice.

driver/ guide was ok. problem was that the tour ended in the middle of the valley to tourist place and we didn´t go down to valley. it had been interesting to see the bottom of the valley which was inhabited.
